Anna Prior shares new single ‘Tech Não’ via House Anxiety [Must Listen]

DJ, producer and drummer Anna Prior releases propulsive, expansive new single ‘Tech Não’ ahead of a longer project due early summer on House Anxiety (Genesis Owusu, King Krule)

The Metronomy drummer will tease out new material this Spring teaming up with James Greenwood (AKA Ghost Culture) whose previous credits include Dan Avery, Kelly Lee Owens, HAAi and Alison Goldfrapp.

The first of these tracks, ‘Tech Não’, is launched today with an immersive A.I. Tom Furse directed video, locating the viewer in a sweaty, shapeshifting club. The otherworldly visual effects reflect the uncertainty in the liminal lyrical themes.

Tech Não’ is about being lost and anxious in nightclubs, and was influenced by her time living in Portugal as the blisteringly hot days were subsiding and giving way to the cool breezes of autumn.

"On the surface, it’s about losing friends in the crowds, helplessness and vulnerability but underneath,” she says. “it's about when the energy in the room starts to turn towards the unfamiliar and you're not sure if what you just saw was real and when the euphoric highs aren't all they're cracked up to be. But this song has a happy ending, which I didn’t end up writing lyrics for directly, but I feel it when I hear it; it’s about the relief of being found and saved by friendly strangers and beloved old friends."

Anna Prior has a percussive approach to electronic music, building out from her crate-digging Soho Radio show - The Beat Palace (also the name of the label she founded championing female and non-binary DJs and producers) and DJ sets, which she describes as ‘explorative missions into the rhythmic unknown…’. The pop sensibilities in her music come from a ‘90s musical education - with the synth lead instrumentation equally recalling the 80s and mid 2000s.

Live set highlights have come in support of 2manydjs in Paris, Palm Trax in Lisbon, as well as at Latitude, Spiritland, and on NYCs fabled The Lot Radio.

With Metronomy announcing a touring hiatus, Anna finds her focus shifting towards this solo endeavour. Life on the road brings regular life-affirming highs, yet is all-consuming; a renewed sense of mental clarity towards this individual mission is reinvigorating.
